Good Dick
Good Dick is a surprisingly hilarious look at an extremely dark topic, and despite the myriad emotional complexities the film explores, it is only 80 minutes long! Though it is short, it is a complete movie, leading us by way of comedy to the dark core of the film, and back out into the light with our nameless heroine, played by Marianna Palka, the film’s writer and director. Here is a woman who isn’t afraid to make herself physically unattractive on screen and still win our hearts (and Jason Ritter’s, her real-life boyfriend, co-star, and producer.) Palka weaves for us the story of a woman who finally opens herself up to love when she wriggles out from under the thumb of her wealthy and abusive father with the help of the guy she rents porn from. Minimalist and character-driven, this coming-of-age story came late for the character, but the movie ended right on time. –CH.

Hi CH,
I saw this film in Wilmington, NC at the Cucalorus Film Festival and really enjoyed it. Even though 80 minutes seems short, the movie played out perfectly (IMO), but maybe that’s because I stayed for the Q&A with Marianna Palka and Jason Ritter afterward. Also, I was shocked to hear that Marianna is Scottish — she hides her accent really well in the movie.
